No month is better for a sports fan than the month of October. The NFL season is well underway, with fans excited & optimistic to see what this season has in store. Unless you’re a Giants fan; Sorry New Yorkers, but that ship has sailed. At the time of this article the Steelers, Patriots, Vikings, Chiefs, and Rams are sitting atop their respected divisions, all with a record of 5-2. The Philadelphia Eagles currently hold the NFL’s best record, with second year quarterback Carson Wentz leading them to an impressive 6-1 start. But don’t get too excited, there’s a lot of football left to play.
The College Football Playoff Selection Committee will meet for the first time on October 30th & 31st. They will officially rank the top 25 teams in the nation as the season reaches the halfway point. No surprise that the Alabama Crimson Tide are once again leading the pack, with the surging Penn State Nittany Lions not far behind.
The NBA season also tipped off with the Boston Celtics visiting the Cleveland Cavaliers, by now you all have seen the clip of Gordon Hayword breaking his leg, so we won’t get into that but we wish him a speedy recovery. That being said, it’s looking like we will be seeing King James get another shot at taking down the super-team that is known as the Golden State Warriors. Although it’s still early, and you never know what could happen during the course of the long 82 game season. Who knows, OKC or Washington could surprise us.
And last but certainly not least, who could forget the best part of October; The World Series! The Los Angeles Dodgers are attempting to win it all for the first time since 1988. With a lights out bullpen that’s matched by their power hitting line up, it’s no surprise that they have made it this far. They will facing the Houston Astros, who recently made history after defeating the New York Yankees in the American League Championship Series. The Astros are now the only team in history having won both the American League Pennant and the National League Pennant. They now have their sights set on bringing home the first World Series Championship in franchise history. It doesn’t get much better than that, let’s hope for an exciting series that comes down to a Game 7. May the best team win.
With all of this going on at once, I’m back to my original statement. It doesn’t get much better than sports in October. Do you remember as a kid the feeling you got when December rolled around? Getting all dressed up to go out and make a snow fort. Counting down the days until the 25th. People often say the holiday season is the best time of the year. I feel the same way, but instead of a winter jacket, we wear our teams jerseys; And we don’t have to wait until December, because for us sports fans, Christmas comes in October.
