Sunday morning reports surfaced of the University of Tennessee football program offering former Tampa Bay Buccaneers & Superbowl champion coach turned Monday Night Football commentator Jon Gruden $10 Million to take a job as the Vols head coach — Tennessee fans were ecstatic.
But Sunday evening Tennessee fans were singing a different tune, as news surfaced that another former Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach was contacted about the job. Ohio State coach Urban Meyer said Sunday during a conference call previewing Ohio State’s Big Ten Championship game, “I know he was contacted, but that’s all I know at this point.”
The Volunteers have been in search of a new coach since they fired Butch Jones in early November. Schiano served as an assistant coach under Joe Paterno from 1990-95 — documents revealed in 2016 allege that Schiano knew about the abuse carried out by Jerry Sandusky, though Schiano denies it.
Schiano — who posted a 68-67 record as Rutgers’ head coach from 2001-2011, has been an assistant at Ohio State for the last two seasons. Tennessee ended its season Saturday with a loss to Vanderbilt, they finished with a 4-8 record — going 0-8 in the SEC.
