Oklahoma Sooners Quarterback Baker Mayfield was named 2017’s Heisman Trophy winner in New York City Saturday night.
The 2-time walk-on QB beat out Louisville Quarterback Lamar Jackson and Stanford Running back Bryce Love.
Baker Mayfield first thanked his offensive line – then went on to thank his coaches, teammates, and Oklahoma Sooner fans.
Things got emotional as Mayfield thanked his parents for all the sacrifices they’ve made throughout his football career that encouraged him to chase his dream.
Mayfield becomes the sixth Oklahoma Sooner to be named Heisman Trophy winner. The Sooner Quarterback won 78.8% of the first place votes, as well as winning the Nissan fan vote.
As someone who has been frequently scrutinized by the media, Mayfield explained how he is still just a twenty three year-old kid trying to figure life out.
The Oklahoma Quarterback described how being a former walk-on gave him the drive to not take anything for granted.
“To the kids out there, “don’t give up, don’t ever give up”
The Oklahoma Sooners face the Georgia Bulldogs on New Years Day – winner will face either the Alabama Crimson Tide or the Clemson Tigers in the National Championship game.
